Exposure & Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Individual Therapy for Adults 18+

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a form of neurodivergence that is characterized by intrusive, distressing, or uncomfortable thoughts, urges, images, or doubts that cause anxiety. These thoughts (obsessions) are then followed by repetitive physical and/or mental behaviors (compulsions) that are meant to reduce the anxiety. Common familiar signs and symptoms of OCD include excessive washing, repeated checking, and a need for symmetry. Lesser known, and just as distressing, OCD symptoms are fears related to harm, mistakes, perfectionism, a need for things to be “just right,” moral concerns about being a good or bad person, taboo topics, and an urgent need to get “What if?” questions answered. People with OCD tend to spend a lot of time avoiding, overthinking, searching for answers online, and seeking reassurance from themselves and others.

These are just some of the many ways that Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is experienced. There is often shame associated with OCD, & it can make it hard to reach out for help.

Treatment for OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy used to treat anxiety disorders. ERP can help individuals reduce their fear and anxiety by gradually exposing them to their triggers and teaching them how to manage their responses. Creating an ERP treatment plan involves identifying triggers, setting goals, and creating a step-by-step plan to gradually expose yourself to your triggers. Monitoring progress with ERP involves tracking your progress and making adjustments to your plan as needed. Preventing relapse with ERP involves continuing to practice the skills you have learned and seeking support when needed.

What can I expect during ERP?

  • 55-minute weekly counseling sessions.

  • Approximately 15-25 sessions.

  • Regular progress tracking assessments.

  • Self-monitoring.

  • Daily homework.

ERP is challenging and takes dedication and consistency. The investment in learning and practicing these skills is completely worth the relief you will experience.

How will ERP help my anxiety?

You will learn what to do when experiencing OCD symptoms to manage and decrease anxiety, shame, guilt, and all the other “fun” experiences that come with having Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). ERP is a medication-free treatment for OCD and can be life changing and free up time for what you actually want to be doing.

Why work with an OCD specialist?

Research has shown traditional talk therapy is not effective at treating OCD. Individuals sometimes spend years in therapy trying to manage OCD symptoms without experiencing relief. By working with an OCD specialist who provides Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy you will be engaging in a proven and effective treatment approach and can experience actual relief from the distress and discomfort caused by OCD.
